Camera & Controls

Hey everyone!

We have spent the last couple of days reading lots of reviews and feedback, and while the game was received very well overall we continue to see negative reviews talking about the controls and the camera.

Since most reviews don't go into too much detail we would be very interrested in more detailed feedback about those issues.

What EXACTLY don't you like about the controls?

What EXACTLY is wrong with the camera?

We would really love to improve those points, but we need to hear more details in order to do so. We are also facing lots of technical limitations that we need to consider, but we will do our best to make the controls as fluid as possible.

Hi SCU developers,

I have been watching news about SCU last year and finally played yesterday. It's very epic and it is surely the best modification for SC I've ever seen. You have really impressed me with this. I know what does it take to make something that great in SC Editor since I tried something too, but that's something I shouldn't be talking about here :D...

I am replying, because I haven't found any way to zoom the camera. I miss this in SCU, because I think the camera is just too far away. I would really appreciate zooming camera. And second. Controls. You have used very good button preset, but however, there was always some delay after pressing a button. sometimes longer, sometimes shorter. Maybe I should have tried reducing graphical settings, but normal Starcraft is running nice and smooth. Even the SCU mod is running fine.

Thanks for possible replying.

I believe what most players are implying is that the camera and movement doesn't seem like that other mmo we all know of.

What I noted:

You can't strafe and I find it difficult to turn my camera and character to face enemies at times. I noticed this especially with the ultralisk boss, I had a bit of an ordeal attempting to reposition with my zealot.

There is no zoom in, (a lot of people enjoy zooming in on their character to see the bad ass more closely)

Amazing mod you have here! I just finished it playing and it's really good. I also pledge myself to the "we want zoom" voice, and would add that sniping ability for the ghost needs more range, given the huge cast/cooldown time it has. I also experienced a bit of issues with the camera, mainly that it was too far away and had to manually change perspective a lot of times to keep my char in sight, otherwise blocked by environmental elements.
Although I had no problems at all with the controls, (I always unkeybind character rotation keys and back-peddle and just use forward and strafes in MMOs, and use the mouse to control the camera at all times instead of my keyboard) I think the problem would lie with the controls being unconventional for an MMO.

Having the camera follow unit direction and adding in character rotation left/right keys would make the game easier to play for players who mostly use their keyboard for controlling unit direction, instead of camera facing with their mouse.

I personally prefer the unit to run backwards than to back-peddle when pressing the move backwards key, makes it have a use.

As for camera zoom, if I'm not mistaken, I believe they did add that in. It's keybound to + and - by default if I recall correctly.

Personally I would of enjoyed it more if I could zoom out more, or maybe if there was an auto follow feature for the camera, I feel like I was spending 3/4th of the game time messing with the camera compared to playing the game.

There are a few bad spots where the camera just refuses to move in 1-2 directions and you just have to walk out and try to deal with it, and on the shuttle is a good example of where camera operation and movement could be improved more.

Overall I wanna thank you all for this great game though, we all see the time you all have put in and I for one enjoy it very much and am looking forward to the continuation of the story line.
My Personal opinion of the control scheme was that the middle mouse button was very awkward to press as when playing MMO's i typically just hold my forward movement button and rotate the camera with the mouse.

The MMO that i play the most is Allods Online and the control scheme for it i have found is very nice, however it is also customizable.

Right click and hold-move camera
Left click and hold-turn character
Click both and hold-move forward while turning character in the direction the mouse moves
W-Forward
A-Stafe Left
S-Back
D-Strafe Right
Q-Turn Character Left
E-Turn Character Right
Hi everyone! We have definatly heard all your feedback about camera and controls in the game and we are currently in the process of rolling out a new patch to all game regions.

This patch includes the following changes:

- Changed movement system
o When not holding down middle mouse button, your character will now just change facing when pressing A/D instead of moving
o Additionally your character will now run circles when pressing W + A/D when not holding down middle mouse button
o Advanced players can press down middle mouse button to use the old 8 way movement which we had before for more agility in combat

- Improvements to the camera system
o When not holding down middle mouse button the camera will now automatically follow your characters facing, which will make it unnecessary to always adjust the camera position while playing the game

- Added further hints how to zoom in and out in SCU to the loading screen and the first ingame hint (Use Numpad + and -)
o We found that lots of people complained about the missing possibility to zoom in and out in SCU, even though this was always possible.
Some things about the update.

1. Pressing S while not holding middle mouse does nothing. I guess that's because of auto camera follow issues.

2. Is it possible to add an option to revert the camera to not auto follow?
When I face my character in a direction using the mouse, then let go and hold W the camera veers slightly off to one side, and the character veers off slightly with the camera. Could the same be done to always have A and D strafe instead of turn even when not holding the middle mouse?

Also, I am getting a longer delay when mouse turning now. I have to say that it's bad enough that it's my number one issue.

And when bumping into walls without holding the middle mouse down my character turns in a direction as a reaction to walking into a wall, then the camera will auto face in that direction and he'll start walking parallel to the wall despite me originally walking perpendicular to the wall.

This is basically because we are missing a proper walk backward animation. Quite simple problem, but without a proper animation it would look really stupid.

However, we would of course like that aswell and we will try to find a solution in the future.

This issue should be fixed as of today.
Hi. Consider this my first post on here (I don't plan on posting here often though, well, not yet at least).

Anyway, I just played SCU after the apparently recent movement/camera related changes, and I found it a bit harder to use. It is neat on the outside, that's for sure, but now I feel forced to make specific movements after holding down the middle mouse button (to turn on 8 way movement mode) just to properly select an enemy target. In other words, I find these new controls MUCH harder to use. Please note that this may mostly be because I don't have the hotfix for solving the issue where, when you press a key, you don't move right away (also I refuse to have a Facebook account).

Could you add an in game option to switch between the old and new movement/camera styles? That would be perfect.

gl hf on making SCU more epic! Smile

Hey guys,

we've just rolled out a new patch which we think greatly improves many of the combat and control issues suffered in previous versions of SCU.

- Reverted WASD movement system to previous versions
- Implemented combat camera rotation: Your camera will now orientate automatically behind your character when enemy targets are selected, cutting down on the amount of multitasking you have to perform to get good camera angles for combat. This option can be turned off in the camera tab of the SCU Options Menu if desired.
- Implemented auto-targeting. When auto-attack is enabled, players will now automatically select enemy targets and engage them, cutting down on problematic targeting issues in fights with a large number of enemies. This option can be disabled in the combat tab of the SCU Options Menu.
- Implemented camera zoom hot-key customization in the SCU Options Menu.

If you had issues, please log in to SCU and let us know what you think of the new features. It's the best we can do until Blizzard gives us more input control.

controls

it would be easier to move around if you were able to use the mouse middle button, like in WoW. ex: when clicking the middle button your character moves forward and when you move the mouse while holding the middle button your character moves akimbo. also an autorun function would be nice. and instead of strafing when you push "a" and "d" how about the character just turns and the camera moves in the same direction
also an autorun function would be nice.

You can press ALT+W to toggle autorun while playing SCU. Smile
